Maya Bloch's use of pencil on paper seems to carve her subjects from their ground. Here the reclining couple, much reminiscent of traditional depictions such as Manet's Breakfast on the Grass, are portrayed in extreme proximity but nonetheless oblivious of the viewer. An inversion of roles occurs as the figures assume beastly characteristics (the woman's bear-like face) while the beasts themselves, the horses in the background, are in equilibrium and peace.
